Class Styles

We offer many styles of yoga which are described below.

Ashtanga Yoga- Moderate

Ashtanga Vinyasa is a system of yoga taught by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois. Vinyasa is synchronization of breath with movement.  Using the ujjayi breath with a dynamic progressive flow of poses creates internal heat which detoxifies the body and enables a healing process to occur. The bandhas are used to regulate the pranic flow, and drishtis, or gazes are used to focus the mind on a particular point while the breath becomes the mantra.  It tones, strengthens and realigns the body while improving flexibility and circulation, strengthening the nervous system and calming the mind.  This class is a moderate practice geared towards beginners and intermediate yogis/yoginis.  It is paced according to the class level.

Chair Yoga Plus - Extra Gentle

This extra gentle yoga class is especially geared towards students who are pre- or post-surgery*, recovering from illness or injury, seniors, newcomers to yoga, or anyone seeking a gentle, slow-paced class. Students will learn a series of modified yoga postures and breathing exercises designed to promote relaxation, improve flexibility, and overall wellness. Classes will include a gentle warm-up period and conclude with approximately 15 minutes of blissful, deep relaxation.   * Note * Students who have had major surgery or treatment within the past six months are requested to submit a doctor’s consent form prior to their first day of class.

Hatha Yoga:

This refers to physical movement, breathing and deep  relaxation.  If someone says they teach "hatha yoga", it means they do not follow one lineage but create a combination of their own,.  At CHANGE, most classes are based on a specific teaching lineage.

Iyengar Yoga  - Moderate

This class will begin with the basic principles of yoga, following the Iyengar method.  Learn the poses with proper alignment and precision while building strength.  The trademark of Iyengar Yoga is an intense focus on the subtleties of each posture.  Poses are typically held much longer than in other schools of Yoga so that one pays close attention to precise muscular and skeletal alignment that this system demands.

Integral Hatha Yoga - Gentle

Integral Yoga uses classical Hatha postures, which are meant to be performed as a meditation, balancing physical effort and relaxation.  Classes include a gentle asana practice, pranayama, guided relaxation and chanting.

Kripalu Hatha Yoga  - Gentle

The three stages of Kripalu Yoga include: willful practice (focusing on alignment, breath, and the presence of consciousness); willful surrender (holding of the postures to the level of tolerance and beyond); and meditation in motion  (a trust in the body's own wisdom to perform the postures and movements to release physical and mental tensions).

Mom/Baby Yoga

Come do yoga with your baby. Most poses incorporate the baby in some way. We also do a little infant massage, baby yoga, deep relaxation and breathing to calm Mom and baby and to get the Mommy's brain to function more fully.

Pre-Natal Yoga - Gentle

Prenatal Yoga for toning and strengthening and preparing for birth.
Calm yourself while creating community.
Open to those who are continuing their yoga practice and those in their 2nd or 3rd trimesters who wish to start a yoga practice.

Restorative Yoga - Gentle

Relax and Refresh Yoga is a gentle movement class where restorative poses and other yoga techniques are incorporated to help you to let go and renew.  Restorative poses are restful poses in which the body is supported with props and the poses are held for extended periods of time. Experience how this class can soothe and regenerate your being, promoting a calm, peaceful state of mind, body and spirit. This is a great way to achieve deep relaxation to help bring balance to our demanding daily lives.

Roller Exercises - Gentle

The key principle in exercising with the Roller System is the functionality and natural movements of the body. Through emphasizing and exercising these movements, which are part of daily activities, you can expect a reduction in injuries, stiffness, weakness and pain.

Sivananda Yoga - Moderate

A meditative style of yoga taught by Swami Sivanada and his disciple Swami Vishnudevananda.  It includes pure Hatha yoga postures (asana) and breathing exercises (pranayama) helping to control the mind through controlling the physical body and psychic energy (prana).  Each class may also include chanting and will leave you feeling calm and refreshed.

Sampoorna Yoga - Moderate

Sampoorna Yoga is classic Hatha yoga and was developed by Yoga Hari who was inspired by the teachings of Swami Sivananda. Sampoorna means "complete" and it is an integrated approach incorporating postures, breathing practices, deep relaxation and meditation. Recharge, refresh and rejuvenate in a safe, non-competitive environment.

Vinyasa Flow  - Vigorous

This is a flowing, invigorating style of Yoga working with the breath to integrate body, mind and spirit into an energetic whole.  Vinyasa Flow class will focus on linking the body movement with the breath.  Specific sequences of breath-synchronized movements are used to transition between sustained poses.  Vinyasa generates a subtle, internal heat of transformation and stokes agni fire for internal cleansing. Agni is the digestive fire used not only to digest physical food but also experiences and sensations. If our fire is strong, we can better adapt to life's challenges.

Vinyasa /Yin Yoga (early morning) - Vigorous

Energize your mind and release the body for your work day with a blend of Vinyasa Flow and slow, deep stretching. Experience an active Vinyasa flow series consisting of eclectic sun salutations and strengthening and stabilizing standing poses transitioning into slow deep stretches focusing on the body’s connective tissue, and then melting into Corpse pose. Start your day with this hour long class and be alert and prepared for whatever the day may bring you!

Vinyasa /Yin Yoga (evening) - Vigorous

Enjoy a blend of both an active (yang) and passive (yin) practice all in one yoga session!  The first 45 minutes will focus on a Vinyasa flow series consisting of eclectic sun salutations and strengthening and stabilizing standing poses transitioning into the remaining 45 minutes on the floor in more passive, long-held poses focusing on connective tissue in the body, and then melting into Corpse pose.  A decadent way of transitioning your day into evening!

Yoga with Babysitting

A yoga class with your little one close by. Parents do yoga and children ages crawling to 6 years can participate, play with the other kids or have stories read to them by the babysitter (often all of the above in this one hour class). Parents pay the babysitter $3.50/child. Leslie teaches on Mondays and Penni teachers on Thursdays.
